  32. Welcome to misc.kids, the newsgroup for parents, soon-to-be
  33. parents, and other people interested in children.  In this group, 
  34. we discuss issues relevant to pregnancy and child rearing, solicit 
  35. advice from other netters on a host of parenting concerns, 
  36. and generally seek and provide support and encouragement with 
  37. respect to raising kids.  This is a group intended for parents of 
  38. children of *all* ages, though questions about babies and younger 
  39. children seem to predominate.  For a fascinating look at the readership
  40. of misc.kids, we urge you to read the results of a survey created,
  41. conducted and compiled by Jonathan Rice (see FAQ index under
  42. "misc.kids reader demographics").

  44. This document introduces new readers both to the preferred
  45. etiquette for misc.kids and to a service we have devised
  46. in this group:  a compilation of files of Frequently Asked
  47. Questions (FAQ).
  48.  
  49.         *** Etiquette Guidelines ***
  50.  
  51. Most of the guidelines here are the same as in
  52. news.announce.newusers.  In fact, it is strongly recommended that
  53. you read the etiquette guidelines in news.announce.newusers (or in
  54. any other introductory text on news readers) before you post any
  55. articles.
  56.

  58. o  Please respond via e-mail whenever possible; if the
  59.    original poster was soliciting advice/information, s/he should
  60.    post a summary to the net.  This helps cut down on net traffic.
  61.  
  62. o  Please read all follow-ups before posting one of your own;
  63.    in many cases, someone else has already covered the same point.
  64.  
  65. o  Please limit the amount of material included from previous
  66.    postings as much as possible, and try to be concise.  Certainly,
  67.    .signatures should be excised.  Remember that most of the audience 
  68.    for misc.kids are busy parents.  However, please make sure you 
  69.    include enough of the original article so as to make your follow-up 
  70.    sensible.  (For example, follow-ups such as "I totally agree!" with 
  71.    no material included from the previous article make no sense at all, 
  72.    due to the nature of news readers.  And of course, if *ALL* that
  73.    you want to say is "I totally agree!", that should certainly be
  74.    handled via private e-mail)

  76. o  Please watch your attributions carefully; avoid misquotes and 
  77.    misconstructions.

  79. o  Please avoid cross-postings to other newsgroups unless you are
  80.    absolutely sure there is relevance to the other group(s).  There
  81.    is usually nothing that will spark a flame war faster than to 
  82.    cross-post an article to groups such as soc.men, soc.women, or 
  83.    alt.sex.  If you feel you must cross-post or respond to
  84.    a cross-posting, please delete misc.kids from the
  85.    Newsgroups line as soon as the relevance to this
  86.    newsgroup disappears.

  88. o  Please check your Subject line carefully!  If you are starting a
  89.    new thread, do not use the standard follow-up command.  (If you
  90.    aren't sure about how to post a new article, read some help
  91.    articles, or read news.announce.newusers (strongly recommended
  92.    reading for any new netter anyway).)  Similarly, if you want folks
  93.    to read your article, and especially, if you want people to offer
  94.    advice/comments, tailor your Subject line accordingly.  This is a
  95.    very busy newsgroup, and Subject lines that are vague might not
  96.    catch the eye of the very people who might have something to
  97.    offer.  For example, if you have questions about breastfeeding 
  98.    and sibling rivalry, please take the time to write two separate 
  99.    articles with appropriate Subject lines.
  100.  
  101. o  Please remember that this newsgroup has a world-wide readership.
  102.    With that in mind, please note the following:  First, readers
  103.    whose primary language is not English might not know what a
  104.    VBAC is, or what Tylenol is.  Second, check your Distribution
  105.    line before posting an article.  If you are looking for an
  106.    occasional babysitter in Idaho, you're unlikely to find interested
  107.    readers in New Zealand!  Third, please be understanding and
  108.    patient with spelling or style errors made by people who are
  109.    obviously posting from a non-English speaking country.  (For that
  110.    matter, spelling and/or grammatical errors should not be pointed
  111.    out via the newsgroup, but through private e-mail if you feel it
  112.    is absolutely necessary to show someone the error of their
  113.    ways.)

  115. o  While there is a newsgroup (alt.kids-talk) for non-adults to
  116.    participate in, comments from children and teens are very welcome
  117.    in this newsgroup.

  119. o  Please refrain from name-calling, tantrums or other hysterics--
  120.    we get enough of that from our children :-).
